Man Deported Due To Address Screw Up

The man in question was deported to Laos, despite his claims of persecution, because he failed to appear at an immigration hearing of which he had no actual notice. His good faith effort to provide a change of address, and oral statement to the immigration judge that he was filing one, was to no avail when somehow a friend to whom he entrusted the change of address form failed to mail it.

Once again, immigration courts operate on standards that no civilized society should accept. Potentially life or death consequences should not flow from petty procedural missteps.
